María Cañas

María Cañas is an audiovisual iconoclast and media savage who engages in videoguerrilla warfare, burrowing into stereotypes and genres to blow them to smithereens. She runs Animalario TV Producciones, a creative platform that practises recycling culture, appropriationism and artistic experimentation in order to fan the flames of the inner fire. She is a die-hard champion of non-privatisation and the liberalisation of our historical memories and imageries, as well as an activist committed to free culture and the idea of culture as a collective construct. Cañas believes in the power of the archive as a tool for cultural development, and in the need to teach people how to govern themselves instead of being governed by others.
