Juan López Díez
Some time ago, I began to reflect on how the experience of dwelling defines our perception of space and time, and nowadays my work explores architectural elements associated with power structures in a quest for alternatives to normative social relations. Using metaphors and site-specific interventions in certain spaces, I try to sever and later re-establish connections between the three factors in my working equation: city, subjectivity and power. The idea of “breakage” is central to my practice, as it lets me link the objectivity of the “outside” world to individual perception. In many cases, this transition is effected through language, which is systematically sliced up and reassembled to reveal new meanings. This idea is echoed in collage, which highlights a complex, ambiguous relationship between texts and images. The resulting interstices or fractures are the source of the tension between private and public and the reassessment of the social sphere.
